Rochester, New York
Rochester, the third largest city in New York State, has more sites on the National Register of Historic Places than any other city its size. Walking around Rochester is a great way to discover the city's fascinating history and modern-day charm. Begin your exploration of the city along East Avenue, and the East Avenue Preservation District. Here you'll find towering shade trees, beautiful broad lawns, and exquisite 19th and 20th century mansions of various classic architectural styles. The Mt. Hope Preservation District, between Ford Street and Highland Avenue, is a fascinating neighborhood of Gothic cottages plus the 19th-century Ellwanger Garden of perennial flowers. Also here is America's first municipal cemetery. Susan B. Anthony is buried within the cemetery and her house, a National Historic Landmark, is not far away. In the Maplewood Historic District you'll be hard-pressed to see all 462 buildings, including 234 historical houses and three parks, but it will certainly be fun trying! Or, for a less strenuous step into history, stroll along Rochester's Main Street, taking a glance at its 22 historical markers. All that sightseeing calls for refreshments, and you'll be sure to find a spot to call your own at the more than 100 restaurants and 40 bars and nightclubs within the downtown area.
